Eugene Public Libary
Eugene, Oregon
Owner: City of Eugene
Architect: Robertson/Sherwood/Architects - Eugene
SBRA - Boston
Completion Date: January 2003
Project Cost: $31 million
Services provided by Balzhiser & Hubbard Engineers:
Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering; Lighting Design; Surveying
Designed to maximize available day lighting, electric lighting systems fit seamlessly within the building. A computer-based lighting control system
balances electric lighting with available daylight and modulates lighting levels during night occupancy to compensate for dark-adapted vision.
The plumbing design features institutional quality water conserving sensor-activated fixtures with manual override. The domestic water heating system
uses a central heating and recirculation system. The HVAC design addressed all facility areas with two high efficiency, gas-fired boilers and an air
side system with separate outside air fans. The building entry features a garden tempered by exhausted, conditioned building air creating a buffer zone
between interior and exterior conditions.
The project is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council, but the City has decided not to pursue certification.
